Choosing your storage rule preset

Milk First help center · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: Settings → Storage rules: CDC default (4 hours room, 4 days fridge, 6/12 months freezer), Conservative (tighter windows for families told to be extra careful), or Custom, where every window is yours to set. Switching presets recomputes every date in your stash instantly.

Who chooses what

CDC default fits healthy, full-term babies, which is who those public windows were written for. Conservative suits preemie, NICU, and immunocompromised situations, and any family whose care team said shorter. Custom exists because your NICU's discharge sheet outranks every app and website, including this one: type in exactly what they told you.

What changes when you switch

Best-by and use-by dates across all existing bags, the Use next ordering, and every reminder, recomputed in one pass. Nothing about your milk's true pumped dates changes; only the windows applied to them.
