The questions we get most

How does "Use next" decide the order?

Oldest safe milk first (first in, first out), with anything expiring soonest at the top. Milk you pinned as "use first" jumps the queue, and expired milk is hidden so you never grab it by mistake. The full logic: how the Use next queue works.

What is the difference between "best by" and "use by"?

"Best by" is the ideal window (for example, 6 months in the freezer). "Use by" is the outer limit (up to 12 months frozen under CDC-aligned guidance). Milk between the two shows as "past best by" so you can decide with open eyes.

I moved milk from the freezer to the fridge. What happens?

Milk First marks it as thawing and starts the 24-hour thawed clock automatically. Its original pump date never changes; moving milk never resets its age. Details: moving milk between locations.

Can I add bags I froze weeks ago?

Yes. Stash → + → Add multiple bags enters a whole brick at once with backdated pump dates, or use Import to paste a list. Walkthrough: bulk-adding bags.

Does the pump timer keep running in the background?

Yes. It is clock-based, so it survives switching apps, locking your phone, and even a full restart.

I mis-tapped and marked the wrong bag used.

Tap Undo in the toast that appears after every action. Sleep-deprived taps are an expected input method here; nothing is permanent without an undo.

Where is my data stored?

On your device. There is no account and no server; we could not read your data if we wanted to. Settings → Data exports everything to CSV whenever you want it: how export works.

How do I cancel Pro?

App Store → your profile → Subscriptions → Milk First. Two taps, no email required, no guilt trip. Cancelling keeps Pro until the end of the paid period, and your data stays yours on the free plan forever.

Which storage rules does the app use?

CDC-aligned defaults, a more conservative preset, or fully custom windows if your care team gave different numbers. Everything recomputes instantly when you switch: choosing your preset, and the underlying chart: breast milk storage chart.
