How bag labels keep your freezer honest

Milk First help center · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: Every bag Milk First creates carries a label code (like MQ-047), shown when you save and editable to match whatever you write physically. Freeze the bag with the same code sharpied on, and any bag you pull from the freezer identifies itself in the app instantly.

Why codes beat dates alone

Three bags all say Jan 11. Which is the 4 oz one you logged before the growth spurt? Codes are unique; dates are not. The app suggests the next code in sequence at every save, bulk adds number themselves, and splits get suffixes (MQ-047-B), so nothing ever shares a name.

Your codes, your way

Prefer initials and dates (AVA-0111-2)? Type anything into the label field; the suggestion is a default, not a rule. The one habit that matters: write the code before the bag enters the freezer, while the sharpie and the app are both in your hands.
