How the Use next queue works
Quick answer: The queue sorts every active container by soonest expiry first, breaking ties with oldest pumped date, and prefers fridge and thawed milk over frozen when deadlines are close. Expired milk drops out of the queue entirely. The top of that list is the Use next card on Today: one glance, grab that bag.
The rules, in order
- Anything past its use-by date is excluded (and flagged for discard).
- Soonest best-by date wins: today's expiring fridge bottle outranks everything.
- Near ties prefer already-liquid milk, because thawing a bag while a bottle dies in the fridge is how waste happens.
- Still tied? Oldest pumped date, then the smaller container, so partial bags clear out.
Overriding when life disagrees
Skip snoozes a bag out of the top slot for 12 hours (bag is at daycare, or you just do not want to thaw right now). Use first pins any bag to the top. The queue is a butler, not a boss.
