What is cluster feeding?

Pumping glossary; plain language, no fluff · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: Cluster feeding is a stretch, usually evenings or growth spurts, when a baby feeds in rapid, back-to-back bursts. It is the baby placing a bigger order with the supply system, not evidence that your milk ran out.

In practice

It peaks around the 2-3 week, 6-week, and 3-month spurts and passes within days. For pumping moms, power pumping is literally a cluster-feeding impression performed for the pump. Soft breasts during a cluster evening still make milk; storage capacity and production are different things.
