What is a milk bank?

Pumping glossary; plain language, no fluff · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: A milk bank is a nonprofit (HMBANA network in North America) that screens donors, pasteurizes donated breast milk, and dispenses it by prescription, overwhelmingly to premature and hospitalized infants.

In practice

Donating is free including blood work, with lifetime minimums around 100 to 150 oz; see how donation works. Buying screened milk requires a prescription and NICU-level pricing, which is why banked milk is medicine first, marketplace second.
