What is oversupply?

Pumping glossary; plain language, no fluff · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: Oversupply (hyperlactation) means producing meaningfully more milk than your baby needs, and it is not the jackpot it sounds like: it raises the risk of clogged ducts and mastitis, forceful letdowns that overwhelm babies, and freezer walls that age out unused.

In practice

It is usually built accidentally by heavy early pumping on top of nursing. Managing it means gradual reduction, never abrupt stopping, and putting the surplus to work: a right-sized freezer cushion and milk donation. If every session soaks through and clogs recur, an IBCLC can plan a safe downshift.
