What is a galactagogue?

Pumping glossary; plain language, no fluff · Updated July 2026

Quick answer: A galactagogue is anything, food, herb, or drug, used to increase milk supply: oats and brewer's yeast at the gentle end, fenugreek and goat's rue mid-spectrum, prescription medications at the far end.

In practice

The unglamorous truth: none outperform frequent, thorough milk removal, and evidence for most herbs is thin, with fenugreek famously helping some and tanking others. Anything strong enough to work is strong enough for side effects, so loop in your provider or an IBCLC before supplementing, and fix removal frequency first.
